Department of Civil Engineering

Background

Since 1964, Khon Kaen University has offered the Bachelor of Civil Engineering Program as one of its first programs. The program is managed by the Faculty of Engineering, one of Thailand’s eight oldest educational institutions producing engineering graduates. It is well-known for producing high-quality graduates and cultivating a robust alumni network.

The Bachelor of Civil Engineering program is a four-year curriculum that prepares students for civil engineering careers. Beginning with a mathematical foundation and basic skill development in their first year, students progress to basic engineering courses in their second year, followed by more technical civil engineering subjects in their third and final years. The program imparts knowledge and develops civil engineering skills through intensive lectures, design courses, and laboratory experiments. Students can select a variety of technical electives to supplement their preferred expertise. Fourth-year students are required to complete civil engineering capstone design projects.

The program’s instructors include faculty members from the Department of Civil Engineering as well as the Language Institute, General Education Office, Faculty of Science, and other engineering departments. All of the course instructors have advanced educational backgrounds, teaching experience, and pertinent knowledge of the subjects they teach. The technical subject instructors specialize in a variety of civil engineering disciplines, including structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, transportation engineering, construction materials, construction management, and surveying.

The Department of Civil Engineering is equipped with staff members and facilities appropriate for teaching and learning, in accordance with the Council of Engineers’ teaching and learning standards. In addition to the bachelor’s degree program, the department also offers graduate-level programs to Thai and international students. The course instructors work on a variety of academic, community, and research projects; all are professional civil engineers with extensive research background. With experience in both civil engineering professions and research, the program’s instructors can convey teaching content with expertise while also demonstrating the application of content in engineering.

The program has established a network of collaboration with multiple organizations in public and private sectors to develop teaching and learning in the program curriculum, and skill development activities. The activities include special lectures given by guest speakers to keep students up to date in the profession, computer training sessions to improve computer skills, study tour projects to broaden students’ worldviews and enhance their experiences, and community development camps to encourage students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings while also promoting soft skills. Furthermore, students are encouraged to take part in a variety of academic competitions, including problem-solving contests, contests for creative construction concepts, challenges for building bridges, and competitions for high-strength concrete, among others.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

  • PEO1 : Graduates successfully practice their professions in the field of Civil Engineering and Infrastructures with the government, industry, and private sectors, both in Thailand and globally, with ethics, professionalism, and professional engineering licensure and experiences.

  • PEO2 : Graduates use leadership skills in their professional practice with confidence and responsibility to the communities and the public, preserving natural resources and realizing economic aspects and sustainability while maintaining a high level of integrity and mutual respect with others.

  • PEO3 : Graduates continue to acquire new knowledge through self-learning skills and/or pursuing advanced studies. Some graduates employ their management and entrepreneurial skills and successfully deviate to other professions such as business and law.

Student Outcomes (SOs)

  • SO1 : An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics

  • SO2 : An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors

  • SO3 : An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences

  • SO4 : An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts

  • SO5 : An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives

  • SO6 : An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions

  • SO7 : An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed using appropriate learning strategies.
